special focus on the western balkans

 Despite the focus of our activities on the entirety of the target countries we work with, the Western Balkans and Serbia especially receive stronger emphasis. The Western Balkan region shares the common experience with Slovakia of formerly belonging to the Eastern Bloc and after the fall of communism the experience of the reverse wave of the authoritarianism. The Western Balkans, which are culturally and historically akin to Slovakia, are the closest post-war region to us, a region which is currently experiencing problems in its democratization process similar to what Slovakia underwent in its economic and political transition in the 1990s. The Pontis Foundation, having a good understanding of the local political and cultural environment, is ready to assist the region in proceeding with this transition while building a new nation upon the dissolution of the state on its way to the European Union.
