Well-known personalities of the Slovak public and cultural life such as directors Juraj Johanides and Dušan Hanák and journalist Juraj Alner entered the “Cage of Solidarity”.


Members of European Parliament Árpád Duka-Zólyomi from Party of Hungarian Coalition, Milan Gaľa from Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party and Monika Flašíková-Beňová from Smer – Social Democracy expressed the support to Cuban political prisoners inside the cage.


Member of European Parliament Peter Šťastný from Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party and Member of Slovak Parliament Pavol Hrušovský from Christian-Democratic Movement expressed their support by holding photographs of two out of 300 Cuban political prisoners while sitting in the cage.


Member of Slovak Parliament Martin Fedor from Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party had visited Cuba in February and had met a few dissidents and former political prisoners. He came to express his support to them also to the “Cage of Solidarity” together with Petra Masácová from the Democracy Foundation.


Every voice, every woman and every man counts, when support for democracy, civil freedoms and human rights in Cuba or in any other country is in the stake. Therefore also the “doctors in white” where among those who entered the “Cage of Solidarity”.

Catholic priest Anton Srholec had been sentenced by communist regime to 12 years in prison for attempting to leave the country illegally. He had served 10 years in the worst communist prison and forced labor camp in uranium mines in Jachymov. He voluntarily spent additional 20 minutes in symbolic prison together with another catholic priest Ján Krstiteľ Baláž and a preacher of the Church of Brotherhood Dušan Pastirčák.


Political scientist, former dissident and signatory of the Charter 77 professor Miroslav Kusý entered the cage together with actor Matej Landl.

 

The “Cage of Solidarity” was located at the Hviezdoslav sqare in Bratislava, in front of the building of the Slovak National Theater, not far from the place where on March 25, 1988 took place “Candle Demonstration” a peaceful demonstration of Slovak people in support of religious freedom and civil rights.
