November 5, 2009 - Representatives of drivers of Stredoslovenská energetika, Inc. presented symbolic checks to four non-profit organizations in total value of  33 250 Euro. The prizes were handed over on October 28th 2009 in Žilina at the announcement of the “I Drive Without Accidents” competition results, which was a part of the grant-giving program of the Foundation Fund Stredoslovenská energetika at the Pontis Foundation. Financial donations given from the Foundation Fund Stredoslovenská energetika were used for projects of the following non-profit organizations: Ozveny (Echos), Mulica (The Mule), Terra Grata and Rescue Team Slovakia.

The competition “I Drive Without Accidents” was launched last year by Stredoslovenská energetika a.s. (SSE, a.s.) with the aim to decrease accident frequency on roads and thus contribute to prevention of road accidents. All drivers in the group SSE who didn’t have an accident over the year, were given the possibility to vote for a project of one of the non-profit organizations, which strive to help decrease accident frequency on roads. In order for projects to be included in the poll they had to fulfill certain given aims – security increase on roads, traffic education, establishment of cycling transport.

Most votes of SSE’s employees and therefore first place went to the civic association Rescue Team Slovakia and their project Preventative - educational film: Traffic Education for Children and Youth. The aim of the film is to decrease children´s injury and mortality rate in transport, teach children proper behavior in traffic. According to Samuel Hruškovic, director of Rescue Team Slovakia, apart from theory, children also need emotional experience and that is why the civic association wants to support children´s education with an interesting and instructive film. This project was supported by the sum of 13 300 Euro.

The second place was won by the non-profit organization Terra Grata with its project Driving school for children on internet. The project has a very similar aim, as the first one – to decrease accident frequency of children on roads, however the means of communication in this project is internet. With the help of a website specialized on traffic education for elementary school students presented in a playful and competitive way, Terra Grata wants to achieve a significant increase in the knowledge of traffic signs, of solutions to model traffic situations and an early discern of dangerous traffic situations. Terra Grata wants to contact more than 500 elementary schools in the Banská Bystrica and Žilina region and involve them in the project. Fundation Fund SSE, a.s. at the Pontis Foundation has set aside 10 000 Euro for this project.

Civic association Mulica (The Mule) has won third place in the voting competition. The aim of their project entitled - Streets for people is to increase awareness about alternative ways of transport and to ensure the development of cycling in the Žilina region. The project’s main activity will focus on interlinking associations from all over Slovakia aimed at municipal cycling development, leaders´ education and public events aimed at advertising cycling transport. This project was awarded a financial support of 6 650 Euro.

The last supported project is the Rimava Green Path administered by the civic association Ozveny (Echos). Main aim of the project is to support development of safe non-motor transport between the town of Rimavská Sobota and Hrachovo by building a so called “green road” with a good quality surface for people on bikes, roller-skaters and pedestrians. The civic association will build a rest point for cyclists and hikers and will mount an information panel with a map and tourist information about the route and important places in the surrounding area. This project was supported by 3 300 Euro.

All four projects have to be realized until the end of the year 2010.
