December 30, 2009 - At the end of 2009 the Pontis Foundation together with Ernst & Young and Johnson Controls Bratislava organized a collection of clothing and other necessities for the civic association Maják and the Child helpline of the Slovak council of UNICEF. Altogether we collected 470kg of clothing and 100kg of books and magazines.
Employees of both companies contributed to the collection. At Ernst & Young 150kg and at Johnson Controls Bratislava another 170kg of clothing for adults was collected. Most of it went to the Civic association Maják. Employees of the association divided the clothing among their 50 clients who regularly come to their social centre in Zlaté Moravce. The rest of the clothing and toys were used to fill packages for families that live in poverty.
Civic Association Maják works with people with health disabilities, with socially underprivileged people, with ethnic minorities, with persons that have served punishment in jail or with families in need.
“Things we sometimes throw into the trash can mean a lot for someone else. We are thankful to the people who think of others and pass their things on”, says Gabika Rakovská from Maják.
The Helpline for children works mainly with families in material and social need.
“We were very pleased by the collection because these types of gifts help our clients and make their journey through not an easy life – a little easier. We mainly deal with families that have difficulties securing for their children the basic necessities for life such as food, clothing and toys” reflects on the importance of the collection Lívia Miklianová, a social worker at the Helpline.
“We gave families the possibility to take from the clothing exactly what they need right now. Our clients had access to all the clothing during a party. After they tried it on, to see if the size fits, they took what they needed. The few clothes that were left over from the party will go to our new clients. The clothing we received was of very high quality, clean and stylish. We were pleased by this, but more importantly, our clients were happy as well,” adds L. Miklianová.
