pontis preparatory trip to kenya brought new computer laboratory to regional high school

March 9, 2010 - On 20th February Pontis Foundation and Youth for Conservation, Kenya launched a computer lab (20 computers and 2 printers) in Moi High School in Rukanga, Kasigau. The event was attended by local community, more than 400 students and local leaders. Dignitaries from the Ministry of Education, Kenya Wildlife Service, Kasigau Trust and other local officials held speeches in support of the project and were praising the continuous support of Slovak donors and SlovakAid in the area. The highlight of the event was an official opening of the computer lab by Hon. Dan Mwazo, MP for the Voi Constituency.

The event was part of Pontis Foundation project “Slovak cooperation in IT education at Schools in Kenya” supported by Slovak Aid and inspired by Innovative Teachers project of Microsoft.

Additionally the trip served as an assessment of the situation in Kenya with the focus on Kasigau area and a research of various parameters of the original situation before the beginning of our project was conducted, which will be used later to estimate the impact and outcomes of the project, and thus its success. A goal for the visit was also to acquire contacts and meet relevant actors, donors and the development community, with the aim to secure the continuation and future development and of the project. We met officials from USAID, EC Delegation to Kenya, Computers for Schools Kenya and Microsoft, and presented our Kenyan project.

We could get familiar with the work of our partners, Youth for Conservation and practically experience how wildlife conservation and ICT education are crucial for the further economic development of the Kasigau region.  With increased conservation and anti-poaching activities the numbers of wildlife animals in the area are increasing, which can potentially attract a higher number of tourists. Wildlife protection and tourism jobs today require local youth to adopt ICT skills, which is the aim of our project.
